Music and Its Positive Effects on Workouts


When you work out what sort of tunes do you like to listen to?

Personally, I’ve got an eclectic taste in music and will listen to almost anything.

BUT I’ve found that when I’m moving a heavy barbell around or a smashing out a sprint WOD, I love to jam out with some hard rock or metal blazing – Metallica RULZ

when I’m strapping myself in for something a little longer – i.e. a chipper-esque WOD – I need something a little more upbeat and bouncy to get me through.

I find that music will change my performance both positively and negatively.
I can be smashing out a session, and a particular song comes on (Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” springs to mind), and things start to go downhill.

Now I’ve done a little research, and from the studies, I read there are no physical advantages of listening to music.

Then why is it that when you’re jamming out to your favourite tunes while getting your WOD on it feels like you can move faster, lift heavier and just generally crush your workout?

From what I’ve read there are only psychological benefits to listening to music while you work out – which in turn leads to increased physical capacity.

Below are three of the main things that listening to music while working out can have on your performance.

1 – It can cause dissociation to your current state.

In layman’s terms, this means that you are distracted ever so slightly, that you don’t register how crappy you feel in the middle of your WOD.

This can be a great help to get you through a session, especially when something is super grindy.

I definitely agree with this one! There have been plenty of times during a workout when a some I can really jam out to comes on, and I get more work done.

2 – It can help move you into a flow state.

Flow is an altered state of awareness during any activity (this can be anything, I got into a flow state while writing this article).

It is usually felt as an increase in focus and energy, and it can sometimes feel like things are running by themselves, almost like an auto-pilot mode has been engaged in your brain!

This flow state can be very beneficial during your exercise sessions and help to keep you going over the long haul.

3 – It can change your emotional state of mind.

For years music has been used as a way to calm the mind, but it can also be used to amp you up.

Everybody has different music that they listen to when they feel happy or sad, and they can use this as a way to alter their emotional state, think of a time that you’ve ever been sad, and a song has come onto the radio, and you pep up almost instantly?

This is an example of how music can change your emotional state.

I have plenty of experience with this when it comes to my time powerlifting.

Just before a lift, I’d plug in my headphones and put on a song that would get me into an amped up state of mind (for a while there “Make It Bun Dem” by Skrillex was a good ramp up song), and in between I’ll put on something a little more chilled to help me “come down” after smashing a heavy lift.

Now with all this in mind, I’d like to ask something of you all.
